Traditionally, vinyl tiles have been manufactured in such a way that they are tight and square to each other when installed, with no gaps between the tiles. Therefore, grouting or filling gaps are usually not required for new installations. However, the vinyl group shrinks over time and is affected by thermal expansion and contraction. Sometimes you will have naturally occurring gaps that need to be filled to maintain the integrity of the floor.
1. Use a mop and household cleaner to clean the floor as usual to remove any dirt and debris. Also, before you mop the floor, you can empty the gap that you know will fill the fill. As long as the floor is clean and free of debris, you can go to construction.
2. Wait for the area to dry for at least 24 hours, then inspect the gap between the vinyl tiles to obtain additional dirt or debris that may still be present. If nothing happens, check it with your fingers to make sure everything is dry. If moisture still exists between the pieces, dry them with a rag or wait until dry.
3. Squeeze some of the caulk into the gap between the vinyl tiles. Use a putty knife to push the sealant down into the gap to fill any potential voids that may be under the edge of the vinyl tile. Pull the putty knife over the fitting to ensure that any excess oil is scraped from the tile surface and the fitting is rinsed clean.
4. Wipe the excess caulking film on the vinyl tile surface with a damp sponge. Refill any gaps that occur over time using the same method.
What you need: putty knife, acrylic latex sealant or silicone sealant, sponge, mop, household floor cleaner
